see this is what I’m talking about

why did you quit youtube?

@Anonymous

i get this question a lot and never think it’s really worth answering but I don’t have anything else to do here it goes:

i started youtube in 2009 (right after coming out) because I was extremely lonely. My parents had just divorced, I was entering high school, and I was being teased pretty regularly, although I definitely had it easier than a lot of people (my parents still love me).

i was honestly very surprised that i got as many subscribers as i did and it started bothering me that ~10,000 people were watching and commenting on a 14-15 year old’s life, sometimes not in the kindest or most constructive way.

My demographics also scared me (YT told me that 60% of my viewers were 45+ men). Not to sound agist or anything, but for a 14 year old, knowing that most of the people watching and commenting were 30+ years older than me really freaked me out.

what really made me decide to quit though was (and this is debatable but whatever) the fact that a lot of ppl on yt started signing up for large ‘companies’ that would get them more subscribers and ads. to me that seemed like cheating and like another way for people with success to get more success easily, quickly, and definitely not on their own accord. that kind of activity, to me, made YT start seeming full of a lot more disingenuous people who were really just there to fulfil their dream of becoming the next chris crocker or something. the birth of the “youtube celeb” en masse really bothered me.

after i got a message one day that my channel was no longer on par with how people think i should be presenting myself: something to the affect of “you have x number of subscribers, you should be collabing and making more videos,” i realised that i did not want to be a part of something that was going to become an obligation. i didn’t want to feel pressure from people i didn’t even know to keep telling people about my life.

since YT i’ve realised that I’m a decently private person, so, regardless of the reasons that I left, it was def for the best.

anon said post a pic so i post a pic
